India is poised to make a significant leap in technology with the announcement that the country will launch its first made-in-India chip by September or October 2025. Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared this groundbreaking news during a press conference in Bengaluru.

The development of the first made-in-India chip is part of the Semicon India program, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2021, with a budget of Rs 76,000 crore. The program aims to create a robust semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India, crucial for sectors like telecommunications, healthcare, and consumer electronics.
Tata Electronics has teamed up with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to establish India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. This facility will produce the inaugural made-in-India chip, a landmark achievement for the nation.
The government has invested Rs 334 crore in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru for research in gallium nitride (GaN) technology. GaN is vital for telecom and power applications, offering an efficient alternative to silicon. IISc’s development of India’s first e-mode GaN power transistor highlights the country’s research capabilities.
The government plans to introduce a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for semiconductor components to boost domestic manufacturing. Additionally, the upcoming portal for graphics processing units (GPUs) under the IndiaAI Mission will further bolster India’s technological advancements.
The launch of the first made-in-India chip marks a pivotal moment in India’s technological journey. With strategic investments, partnerships, and a focus on research, India is set to become a key player in the global semiconductor industry, driving economic growth and innovation.
