Nexperia has recently introduced the industry’s first ESD protection diodes that are fully compliant with the OPEN Alliance standards for 10BASE-T1S automotive Ethernet applications. These cutting-edge diodes are engineered to shield automotive Ethernet networks from electrostatic discharge (ESD), ensuring reliable and robust performance in modern vehicles.

The new diodes, PESD1ETH10L-Q and PESD1ETH10LS-Q, boast exceptionally low capacitance of just 0.4 pF. This makes them suitable not only for 10BASE-T1S but also for higher-speed applications such as 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 in-vehicle networks, all while maintaining excellent signal integrity. These diodes offer a single-line ESD protection solution with up to 18 kV according to IEC 61000-4-2 standards and up to 15 kV with 1000 discharges as per OPEN Alliance specifications.
One of the standout features of these diodes is their ability to operate across the full range of automotive board net voltages. This includes 12 V typically found in cars, 24 V in trucks and larger commercial vehicles, and 48 V in hybrid and electric vehicles. This versatility allows manufacturers to use a single ESD protection diode for all automotive Ethernet applications, simplifying board designs and supply chains.
The PESD1ETH10L-Q is available in a compact DFN1006-2 package measuring 1.0 mm x 0.6 mm x 0.48 mm. The PESD1ETH10LS-Q comes in a DFN1006BD-2 package measuring 1.0 mm x 0.6 mm x 0.37 mm with side-wettable flanks for automated optical inspection (AOI) in applications that require higher levels of soldering reliability. Nexperia’s launch of these 10BASE-T1S-compliant ESD protection diodes represents a significant milestone in automotive connectivity and electrification. By bridging the gap between legacy systems like CAN and LIN and modern in-vehicle networks, these diodes empower automotive manufacturers to create smarter, more versatile, and future-proof vehicles.
