Renesas Electronics Corporation has launched its latest innovation in industrial automation: the RA8T2 microcontroller (MCU) group, engineered specifically for high-end motor control applications. This new MCU family is poised to redefine performance standards in factory automation, robotics, and precision motor systems.

At the heart of the RA8T2 group is a powerful 1 GHz Arm® Cortex®-M85 processor, complemented by an optional 250 MHz Cortex®-M33 core. This dual-core architecture allows developers to separate real-time motor control tasks from communication and system-level operations, optimizing performance while reducing power consumption and board space.
The Cortex-M85 core leverages Arm’s Helium™ technology, delivering a significant boost in digital signal processing (DSP) and machine learning (ML) capabilities. This enables predictive maintenance features, helping manufacturers reduce downtime and improve operational efficiency.
Recognizing the demands of modern industrial networks, the RA8T2 MCUs come equipped with:
- Dual Gigabit Ethernet MACs with DMA
- Two-port EtherCAT slave controller
- USB 2.0 FS host/device/OTG
- CAN2.0 and CAN FD
- I3C, I2C, SPI, SCI, and Octal SPI interfaces
These features ensure seamless, synchronized communication across complex automation systems.
The RA8T2 group introduces up to 1MB of high-speed MRAM with 100 MHz access—offering faster write speeds and superior endurance compared to traditional Flash memory. It also includes tightly coupled memory (TCM): 256KB for the Cortex-M85 and 128KB for the Cortex-M33, ensuring jitter-free real-time performance even under heavy interrupt loads.
Designed for precision, the RA8T2 MCUs offer:
- PWM timer functionality up to 300 MHz
- Complementary PWM generation for multi-phase inverters
- Dead-time insertion and asymmetric PWM support
- Phase-counting for AC servo control
- Dual 16-bit ADCs with simultaneous sampling across three channels
- High-speed comparators and Port Output Enable (POEG) for rapid overcurrent protection
These capabilities make the RA8T2 ideal for controlling brushless DC motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors, and AC servos.
Security is a priority, with features like RSIP-E50D cryptographic engine, secure boot, tamper protection, and debug lockdown. Developers benefit from Renesas’ Flexible Software Package (FSP), Motor Workbench tool, and a comprehensive motor control development kit, enabling rapid prototyping and deployment. With the RA8T2 MCU group, Renesas continues to push the boundaries of motor control technology. These devices not only deliver unmatched performance but also simplify system design, reduce costs, and enhance reliability—making them a cornerstone for next-generation industrial solutions.ter.
