Bosch Unveils the SMP290: The World’s First Smart Tire Sensor with BLE Connectivity

Bosch has taken a bold leap into the future of vehicle safety with the launch of the SMP290—a compact, smart tire pressure monitoring sensor (TPMS) that redefines what’s possible with MEMS technology.

At just 3.5 x 4.5 mm, the SMP290 might be small, but it’s brimming with innovation. This groundbreaking sensor is the first of its kind to integrate Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) directly into a MEMS-based TPMS. Tailored for a wide range of vehicles—from motorcycles to trucks—it combines a pressure sensor, temperature sensor, two-axis accelerometer, microcontroller, and BLE interface into one streamlined chip.

Thanks to its ultra-low power design, the SMP290 can operate for up to 10 years on a single battery, supporting both valve-mounted and in-tire installations. But its true genius lies in its connectivity: the BLE interface enables real-time monitoring, seamless communication with smartphones, and even over-the-air updates, a rarity for sensors in this category.

The SMP290 is more than just an upgrade—it’s a systems-level rethink. By leveraging BLE for tire data transmission, it simplifies the vehicle’s architecture, reducing the need for redundant components. It can even share the BLE infrastructure used by other systems like keyless entry, paving the way for more unified and efficient vehicle design.

This innovation hasn’t gone unnoticed. The SMP290 has been nominated for the 2025 Best Sensors Awards in the Automotive & Mobility category. With over 23 billion sensors produced, Bosch is once again proving why it’s a global leader in sensor technology.

The SMP290 signals not just smarter tires—but smarter, more connected vehicles across the board. Bosch isn’t just riding the wave of innovation—it’s driving it.
