Penang, Malaysia – In a significant leap for the semiconductor sector, POET
Technologies Inc., the innovative Toronto-based leader in opto-electronic
solutions, has entered into a groundbreaking manufacturing agreement with
Globetronics Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (GMSB). This collaboration will see
Globetronics producing advanced optical engines for POET right here in Penang.
The partnership encompasses a Master Agreement, Optical Engine Purchase Agreement, and a Deed of Consignment. Under these agreements, Globetronics will handle the assembly and testing of POET’s pioneering optical engines, using designs exclusively crafted by POET. An integral part of this deal is the installation of state-of-the-art wafer-level process equipment at Globetronics’ facility.
Globetronics Technology Berhad (GTB), the parent company of GMSB, has committed around RM7.7 million (US$1.7 million) in additional capital expenditures for this project between 2025 and 2027. This substantial investment highlights the strategic importance and mutual benefit of the partnership for both entities.
Dr. Sanjiv Narayan, CEO of POET Technologies, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This partnership with Globetronics marks a pivotal expansion of our manufacturing capabilities, allowing us to meet the burgeoning demand for our optical engines in the data center, telecommunications, and AI sectors.”
This collaboration is set to significantly bolster POET’s production capacity and operational efficiency by leveraging Globetronics’ expertise in semiconductor manufacturing. The partnership aligns perfectly with POET’s “China Plus One” strategy, aimed at diversifying its manufacturing base and minimizing reliance on any single region.
The agreement, spanning three years, will see POET issuing purchase orders tailored to specific types of optical engines. This strategic collaboration is anticipated to strengthen POET’s market position and drive forward innovation in the opto-electronics industry.
