onsemi Seals $115M Deal to Boost Power Tech with Qorvo’s Cutting-Edge SiC JFET Acquisition

Scottsdale, Arizona – onsemi (Nasdaq: ON), a front-runner in intelligent power and sensing technologies, has recently announced a game-changing acquisition of Qorvo’s United Silicon Carbide subsidiary and its Silicon Carbide Junction Field-Effect Transistor (SiC JFET) technology for a striking $115 million in cash. This strategic acquisition is poised to significantly enhance onsemi’s EliteSiC power portfolio, addressing the escalating demand for high energy efficiency and power density in critical applications such as AI data centers and electric vehicles (EVs).

With the inclusion of Qorvo’s innovative SiC JFET technology, onsemi aims to strengthen its position in the burgeoning markets of AI data centers, which require high-performance power supply units capable of handling increased workloads and energy consumption. Additionally, the acquisition will fast-track onsemi’s capabilities in EV battery disconnects and solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs), two areas experiencing rapid growth and technological advancements.

SiC JFETs, known for their exceptional efficiency, offer low on-resistance per chip area and compatibility with off-the-shelf drivers, reducing development time and costs. This technology’s integration into onsemi’s offerings is expected to deliver substantial benefits in terms of faster development cycles, reduced energy consumption, and lower overall system costs, providing considerable value to both power supply designers and data center operators.

Simon Keeton, Group President and General Manager of the Power Solutions Group at onsemi, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, “As AI workloads become increasingly complex and energy-intensive, the importance of reliable SiC JFETs that deliver high energy efficiency and can manage high voltages will continue to grow. By integrating Qorvo’s industry-leading SiC JFET technology, we are enhancing our intelligent power portfolio, offering our customers innovative solutions to optimize energy consumption and increase power density.”

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is anticipated to finalize in the first quarter of 2025. This acquisition is expected to expand onsemi’s market opportunity by an impressive $1.3 billion within five years, reinforcing its leadership in the semiconductor industry.

The acquisition marks a significant milestone for onsemi, as it positions itself to capitalize on the growing demand for advanced power solutions in various sectors. The enhanced EliteSiC power portfolio will be instrumental in meeting the critical needs of AI data centers, EV battery systems, and other high-voltage applications, driving innovation and efficiency in these fields.

onsemi’s acquisition of Qorvo’s United Silicon Carbide subsidiary and SiC JFET technology is a strategic move that underscores its commitment to advancing power technology and meeting the evolving demands of modern industries. The integration of this cutting-edge technology into onsemi’s portfolio promises to deliver enhanced performance, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, setting new standards in the semiconductor industry.cs.
