Onsemi Launches Si/SiC F5BP-PIMs Boost Solar Power Efficiency and Output

onsemi has recently unveiled its latest innovation in the realm of power electronics: the F5BP Power Integrated Modules (PIMs). These modules are designed to significantly enhance the efficiency and power output of utility-scale solar string inverters and energy storage systems (ESS).

Hybrid Technology: The F5BP-PIMs integrate both silicon and silicon carbide (Si/SiC) components, combining the best of both worlds to deliver superior performance. This hybrid approach reduces the footprint while increasing power output by 15%.

Enhanced Power Density: Compared to previous generations, the new modules offer increased power density and higher efficiencies within the same footprint. This allows solar inverters to boost their power output from 300kW to 350kW.

Cost Efficiency: The improved efficiency and power density mean fewer modules are needed to achieve the same power threshold, potentially reducing power device component costs by more than 25%.

Energy Savings: A one-gigawatt (GW) capacity utility-scale solar farm using these modules can achieve energy savings of nearly two megawatts (MW) per hour, equivalent to powering more than 700 homes per year.

Advanced Components: The F5BP-PIMs feature 1050V FS7 IGBTs and 1200V D3 EliteSiC diodes, which facilitate high voltage and high current power conversion while reducing power dissipation and increasing reliability.

Innovative Design: These modules employ an I-type Neutral Point Clamp (INPC) for the inverter module and a flying capacitor topology for the boost module, optimizing electrical layout and reducing stray inductance and thermal resistance.

With solar power achieving the lowest levelized cost of energy (LCOE), it is becoming the preferred source for renewable power generation globally. The F5BP-PIMs support this trend by offering maximum efficiency and reliable power conversion, crucial for maintaining stable energy flow to the grid, especially when paired with large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Sravan Vanaparthy, Vice President of the Industrial Power Division at onsemi, emphasizes the importance of these advancements: “Continual improvements in system efficiencies and advanced storage solutions are essential for maintaining the stability and reliability of global grids during peak and off-peak power demand. A more efficient infrastructure increases adoption and assures us that, as more solar power generation is built out, less energy is wasted, pushing us forward on a path away from fossil fuels”.

The onsemi F5BP Power Integrated Modules represent a significant step forward in the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of solar power and energy storage systems. By integrating advanced silicon and silicon carbide technologies, these modules not only enhance power output but also contribute to a more sustainable and reliable energy future.
