What Electronic Components Was Used to Build MSG Sphere?

MSG Sphere is a futuristic entertainment venue that is being built in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first lighting test of the façade LED screen was opened this week, it will offer immersive experiences to the audiences using cutting-edge technology. But what electronic components was used to build this amazing structure?

The Exosphere

One of the most striking features of MSG Sphere is its exosphere, which is a spherical LED screen that covers the entire exterior of the building. The exosphere will have about 600,000 square feet of programmable lighting that can display any image or animation imaginable. It will also be the largest LED screen in the world, with a resolution of 19,000 by 13,500 pixels, which is 100 times clearer than today’s best HD TVs.

To construct the exosphere, workers used a giant crane called the DEMAG CC-8800, which is the fourth largest crawler crane in the world. The crane took 18 days to assemble and was used to lift and install the steel sections that form the skeleton of the sphere. The exosphere’s dome alone weighs 13,000 tons and has a surface area of 220,000 square feet.

The Interior Display

Inside MSG Sphere, there will be another LED screen that will surround the stage and audience in a 360-degree visual environment. The interior display will cover an area of nearly four acres and will have a curved shape that follows the contour of the sphere. The display will also have a spatial audio system that will use as many as 164,000 speakers to create a realistic sound field.

To support the interior display, workers installed a central section of steel framing that is nicknamed “the mohawk”. This section arches from behind the center of the stage up to 240 feet above the venue floor and reaches behind the seating area. The mohawk is part of the immersive steel framework that will hold the LED screen and the speakers. The entire framework will weigh approximately 730 tons when completed.
