Apple Ends Its Electric Car Project A Decade-Long Journey

After nearly ten years of development, Apple has decided to end its electric car project, internally known as Project Titan. This ambitious endeavor aimed to create a luxurious, self-driving electric vehicle with a price tag exceeding $100,000. However, the road to realization was fraught with challenges and pivots.

The Rise and Fall of Project Titan

  • Initial Ambition: Apple’s vision for Project Titan was grand: a high-end electric car with Level 4 self-driving capabilities. However, over time, the project’s scope was scaled back to Level 2+.
  • Delays and Shifts: Work on the car began way back in 2014, but delays pushed the target release date to 2028. Ultimately, the car will not be released at all.
  • Profit Margins Concerns: Apple’s leadership worried that the profit margins might not meet their expectations. Despite significant investments, the company faced high start-up costs and a challenging regulatory environment.
  • Generative AI Focus: Some staff members will transition to work on generative AI projects within Apple. The fate of others involved in automobile engineering and design remains uncertain.

What Lies Ahead

With the electric car project canceled, Apple’s future expansion areas include:

  • Mixed Reality
  • Wearables
  • Generative AI

While the electric car dream may have faded, Apple continues to innovate in other domains, leaving us eagerly anticipating what’s next on their horizon.
