TSMC Lowers Its Chip Prices by Up to 30%: A Strategic Move or a Desperate Measure?

TSMC recently announced a surprising decision to cut the foundry price of its 8-inch wafers by up to 30%. This move comes amid a global chip shortage that has affected various industries, from smartphones to automobiles. Why did TSMC make this decision, and what are the implications for the chip industry and its customers?

One of the main reasons behind TSMC’s price cut is the sluggish demand for 8-inch wafers, which are mainly used for making chips for automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics applications. As a result, TSMC and its invested company, Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, have faced excess inventory and low utilization rates for their 8-inch wafer fabs.

For example, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China’s largest chipmaker, has reportedly lowered its 8-inch wafer prices by 15% to 20% in the second quarter of this year.
